The BMW E30 is the true definition of a modern classic, it represents a time when BMW were renowned for creating some of the very best cars on the market earning their tagline ‘Ultimate Driving Machine’.
Being a 320i this car has the legendary 2.0-litre BMW M20 6-cylinder engine, what’s more is that this car was also selected with the Manual Gearbox, a highly desirable and increasingly rare choice. As anyone who knows anything about BMW E30s will tell you, this is the configuration to have.
The history and provenance of this car is unmatched and likely never to be repeated. The car was ordered in late 1988 and delivered new to a lady from Kent in February 1989, the only optional extra selected was the winter pack floor mats until both front and rear mudflaps were factory retro fitted months later. Within the first 3 years of ownership the car had covered roughly 35,000 miles and then in the subsequent 30 odd years covered roughly the same distance again as it was used sparingly for special occasions. The car has spent its whole life meticulously and lovingly maintained almost exclusively by a singular individual at a garage local to where the car was originally delivered. The car was in possession by its original owner until earlier this year when I had the opportunity to acquire it, making me just the second registered keeper.
As is to be expected with a Manual 6-cyliner BMW E30 that has been as cherished as this, the car drives superbly. It is smooth and the straight 6 engine note is exquisite thanks in part to a partial stainless-steel exhaust, the manual gearbox and rear wheel drive means the car is engaging but not difficult to drive, it can more than hold its own in modern traffic. A new cambelt was fitted less than 500 miles ago.
The condition of this car needs to be seen to be believed. Entirely original BMW Schwarz paintwork all around with no dents or blemishes to be seen. The interior is houndstooth anthracite cloth and is unmarked, the black interior trim is also entirely scuff free along with the colour matched black hood which once again is completely original even retaining the original supplying dealer sticker in the rear window. The BMW alloy wheels suit the car excellently and present extremely well with only minor scuffs as to be expected.
This car is not like other BMW E30s that you see out there, this car is possibly unique, a level of story and history that has been carefully curated throughout its life which is increasingly rare to find nowadays. This car is the benchmark for what a well-documented, low owner, low mileage classic BMW should look like.
A comprehensive history file is present, including the original bill of sale and numerous correspondents with the dealer during the car’s early years, every MOT since 1992 is present as well as a heap of service bills and bills for extra work carried out. The original owners pack is present with 12 stamps in the service book as well as 2 sets of keys. The original spare wheel, jack and tool kit are present along with the original and unopened hood cover.
The car has an advisory free MOT until August 2026.
